Scotland Sightseeing and New Year’s at Liverpool

December 28, 2016-January 1, 2017

I knew I wanted to do a mini holiday within a holiday while in the UK. Paris would require a different visa so we decided on Scotland instead, and we have no regrets. Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been to. It’s got a charming old world feel that transports you back in time. I wish we had more days there.

We booked a day trip to the West highland lochs (lakes) and castles for our only full day and it was such a fun and interesting one. We visited quaint towns and vast lakes as well as old castles. Alex and I had the best mussels and fish & chips in a tiny restaurant in Inveraray where we had a thirty minute stopover. We also explored Doune Castle, the filming location of the series Outlander and Winterfell in Game of Thrones! When we returned to Edinburgh in the evening, we wandered into the shops along the Royal Mile, many of which sold a variety of scotch and mini bottles of every alcohol you can imagine. I’ve made a mental note to go on a whisky tasting and midnight ghost tours next time I visit!

We flew to Edinburgh but took the train back to England so that we could stay in Liverpool for New Year’s with Alex’s relatives. His cousins took us to the Liverpool Cathedral, the Three Graces which include the beautiful Liver building, Albert Dock and the pier. We also drove by the ‘Strawberry Fields’ mentioned in the Beatles song! For New Year’s Eve we had a yummy dinner and make-your-own (alcoholic) desserts! We waited for midnight with a game of scrabble  then popped out the champagne when it was time to watch the fireworks display in Central London on the TV. So many happy memories. ❤
